A note from the founder

Why I Built Step One

I didn't build Step One because I thought self-publishing needed another complicated piece of software. I built it because the information already exists everywhere, and that was part of the problem.

When you finish writing a book, you suddenly run into an entirely different world: trim sizes, margins, gutters, ISBNs, cover dimensions, print-ready files, KDP, IngramSpark, Draft2Digital, audiobooks, metadata, and a dozen decisions nobody mentioned while you were writing.

You can find answers to almost all of those questions online. I did.

The problem was figuring out which answer I needed, whether it was current, and what I was supposed to do next.

After going through the self-publishing process myself, I wanted to create the resource I would have wanted at the beginning: one clear roadmap that explains the process without assuming you are a publishing expert.

Step One does not publish your book for you.

It does not write your book.

It is not a vanity press.

It does not replace an editor, designer, formatter, or other professional when you choose to hire one.

It simply helps you understand the process, make informed decisions, and know what comes next.

That's the whole idea.

Less searching. Less guessing. Fewer open tabs. One step at a time.
