Lulu Formats: Coil-Bound Cookbooks & Other Print Books
Choose how the reader will use it
For a cookbook, being able to keep a recipe open on a counter may matter more than having a traditional spine. For a novel or a gift edition, a conventional paperback or hardcover may fit better. Choose your selling route at the same time: a printable option can still be excluded from Global Distribution.

Coil binding — the spiral-style option
Pages are punched along one edge and held by a coil. It can be useful for cookbooks, workbooks, manuals, and reference material that readers need open while using both hands. Leave room for the punched edge so ingredients, checkboxes, and captions remain readable. Check available sizes, page counts, paper, and color combinations in Lulu’s calculator. Coil binding is excluded from Lulu Global Distribution; plan on personal copies, an available Lulu Bookstore listing, or a suitable direct-sales setup.
Perfect-bound paperback
Pages are glued into a flexible cover with a spine. This can suit novels, nonfiction, and an alternative cookbook edition intended for eligible retail distribution. It will not behave like a coil book on a counter. Its spine width depends on the exact paper and page count.
Hardcover casewrap
The cover design is printed around a rigid case. It can suit keepsake or gift editions. Allow for the wrap and hinge zones shown by Lulu’s template. Lulu currently describes eligible hardcovers as an Ingram/LSI distribution option rather than direct Amazon distribution; verify your exact specifications.
Linen wrap with dust jacket
A cloth-style hardcover with a separate printed jacket adds flaps and other cover considerations. Do not reuse a paperback cover PDF. Check availability, jacket template, and the supported distribution channel before paying for design.
Saddle stitch and magazines
Folded sheets are stapled along the fold. This is different from coil binding and from a glued paperback. It can suit short publications, but Lulu excludes saddle stitch from Global Distribution. Magazine inside-cover printing also has its own file layout. Use the magazine path linked below.
A practical cookbook example
You could offer a coil-bound kitchen edition through Lulu and prepare a separate eligible paperback edition for wider retail submission. Treat these as separate production projects: binding, margins, cover template, price, and any required ISBN can differ. Do not buy an ISBN for a coil edition merely because an ISBN is needed for the paperback’s distribution route.
Decide before formatting
- Open the calculator and select the product, trim size, ink, paper, and binding you want. Only supported combinations can be used.
- Check the minimum and maximum page count shown for that combination. Avoid designing around a binding that disappears after uploading your PDF.
- Compare the production cost at your likely page count. Color photographs can make a cookbook substantially more expensive to print.
- If wider retail is essential, confirm distribution eligibility now. If coil binding is essential, plan a compatible sales route.
- Make a small layout sample with a long recipe, a full-page photograph, and an inner-edge caption. Check that the design is usable before formatting the whole book.
