Imprint Information
What to do
Decide what publisher or imprint name will appear on your book, tied to the ISBN choice you just made.
Why it matters
The imprint is the name readers and libraries see listed as "publisher." It's a small detail on an individual book, but it's part of building a recognizable author or press identity over time.
Step-by-step
- If you're using the free KDP ISBN, your publisher will automatically show as "Independently published," this field isn't editable in that case.
- If you own your own ISBN, KDP lets you enter your own imprint name (your author name, a made-up press name, or your small publishing business name) in the Publisher field during setup.
- Keep the imprint name consistent across every book you publish under it, this is what builds a recognizable publisher identity over time, the same way a small press does.
- There's no requirement to register an imprint name as a business; many self-publishers simply use a name they've chosen for this purpose.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting to set a custom imprint name while using the free KDP ISBN. That combination isn't available, custom imprint requires owning your ISBN.
- Using a different imprint spelling or name across different books, which fragments your publisher identity instead of building it.

Troubleshooting
Can I change my imprint name after I've already published a few books under a different one?
You can set a new imprint name for future books, but changing what's already printed and listed on past books published under the free KDP ISBN generally isn't possible, since that field is locked to "Independently published" in that case.
