Trim Size, Paper, Ink, and Bleed
What to do
Select the trim size, paper type, ink type, and bleed setting in KDP that match what you actually formatted for.
Why it matters
These four settings have to match your actual print-ready interior file exactly. A mismatch here is the single most common reason KDP's automated file checker rejects an upload.
Step-by-step
- On the Paperback (or Hardcover) Content step, select the exact Trim Size you formatted your interior for in the Formatting stage of this app, KDP won't accept a file sized for a different trim.
- Choose your Paper type (white or cream) and Ink type (black and white or color) to match how your interior was designed. A book with color images inside needs color ink selected here.
- Choose whether your interior uses Bleed (images or design elements that run to the edge of the page) or not, matching the Bleed decision you made in the Formatting stage.
- If you need the exact numbers behind any of these choices (spine width, cover dimensions, margins), use the printer’s official calculator or template generator. Use the local calculators for supported combinations and verify the result with your printer’s template.
- If your paperback has a color interior, check your page count against KDP's minimums for each color ink type. Standard Color requires at least 72 pages. Premium Color requires at least 24 pages, the same as KDP's overall paperback minimum. A color paperback between 24 and 71 pages must use Premium Color, since Standard Color simply isn't offered below 72 pages.
- Premium Color costs more to print than Standard Color, factor that higher printing cost into your list price and royalty math when you reach the Pricing and Royalties topic ahead.
- Once you know your trim size, page count, paper, and bleed, you can generate a real cover template file from KDP or IngramSpark, a guide you can drop straight into your design program. Expand the information section below for exactly where to get one and what to do with it.

What a cover template actually is, and why its dimensions aren't arbitrary
- A cover template is a ready-made outline of your exact full wrap cover, front cover, spine, and back cover as one continuous shape, sized precisely for your specific book. It usually comes as a flat image or PDF with guide lines marking where the trim edge, the bleed edge, the spine, and the barcode area fall.
- Those dimensions aren't a standard size you pick off a list, they're calculated from four things about your specific book: trim size (the physical page dimensions), page count (more pages means a wider spine), paper type (thicker paper stock also widens the spine for the same page count), and the binding format. Change any one of those four and the correct cover dimensions change too, which is exactly why KDP and IngramSpark generate the template FOR your specific book instead of offering a fixed-size download.
- The local calculators help with dimensions; use the platform’s official tool to obtain your actual template.

Generating a cover template on KDP
- Go to KDP's Cover Calculator (you can reach this directly, you don't have to be in the middle of setting up a title, though the same trim/paper/page-count inputs also appear when you get to the Content step of an actual paperback or hardcover title).
- Enter your book's trim size, page count, paper (white or cream), ink (black-and-white or color), and the other fields shown by the calculator. Cover bleed is part of the cover template; it is separate from your interior bleed choice.
- Click to calculate dimensions, then download the template. KDP provides it as a flat image/PDF template showing your exact front, spine, and back dimensions with trim, bleed, and (for paperback/hardcover) barcode-area guides marked.

Generating a cover template on IngramSpark
- Sign into your IngramSpark account and open the Cover Template Generator tool from your account portal (listed under IngramSpark's own tools/resources; IngramSpark's file-creation guide directs you to use this generator rather than building cover dimensions by hand).
- Enter the same specifications: trim size, page count, paper type, binding, and other fields requested by the tool.
- Unlike KDP's calculator, which lets you download the template immediately on-screen, IngramSpark generates the file and emails it to you, and offers a choice of file format: a flat PDF/image guide, or a real InDesign template file if you work in InDesign specifically.

What to actually do with the template once you have it
- The template is a GUIDE, not your finished cover, it shows you exactly where the trim line, bleed line, spine, and barcode area fall for your specific book, but it has no cover design of its own.
- In InDesign: place the template as a guide layer (File > Place it onto its own layer, then lock that layer so you don't accidentally draw on top of it) and design your actual cover artwork on layers above it, using its lines to know exactly where the spine begins and ends and where bleed needs to extend to.
- KDP’s builder manages its own wrap. A generic Canva template is not guaranteed to fit your book: use your exact printer template and check all dimensions. A standalone template is useful if you're designing in InDesign, Photoshop, Affinity Publisher, or a similar program that doesn't already know your book's dimensions.
- Whichever program you use, always re-generate a fresh template (or re-enter updated numbers) if your page count changes after you've already started your cover design, spine width is directly tied to page count, so a manuscript that gained or lost even a few pages after your last edit can shift the correct spine width enough to misalign your cover.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Selecting a trim size in KDP that's close to, but not exactly, the size you formatted for in your word processor or layout software.
- Forgetting to select Bleed if any part of your interior design runs to the page edge, which will cause a mismatch when KDP checks the file.
- Trying to select Standard Color for a color paperback under 72 pages, KDP simply doesn't offer that option below 72 pages, Premium Color is the only color option until then.
- Designing a cover to a template generated with an old page count, then editing the manuscript further afterward, spine width shifts with page count, so a cover template generated too early can go stale just like an un-updated table of contents.

Troubleshooting
I'm not sure what spine width or margins I need for my trim size and page count.
Use KDP’s official cover calculator for wrap dimensions and its current margin guidance for interior settings. The local calculators now work; compare their results with your printer’s official specifications.
Why won't KDP let me choose Standard Color?
Check your page count. If your color paperback is under 72 pages, choose Premium Color. Standard Color begins at 72 pages.
Where do I actually get a cover template file?
On KDP, use the Cover Calculator at kdp.amazon.com/cover-calculator, it gives you an immediate download. On IngramSpark, use the Cover Template Generator tool in your account portal, it emails you the file (PDF/image, or an InDesign template if you request that format).
